Union Station Parking GarageSpringfield, MADuring the design phase of the restoration and development of Springfield, Massachusetts’ Union Station, Bunting worked closely with HDR Architecture to incorporate Bunting’s Volare Tension Façade System on the building’s exterior. The system included the structural support system, the cladding, and the LED lighting.
HDR, Skanska USA (the owner’s representative), and Springfield Redevelopment Authority had all determined that because of the prominent position of the new parking garage, simple blank concrete walls should not dominate the location. Bunting was able to provide an alternative. After Daniel O’Connell’s Sons was appointed general contractor for the project, Bunting Architectural Metals was contracted on a design assist basis. Bunting then provided the final engineering using Bunting’s Volare Tension System and also performed the installation. HDR was able to focus on the design while Bunting concentrated on the engineering, fabrication, and installation of the façade system. By utilizing a modified version of Volare, maximum free airflow was accomplished as well as visually breaking up the concrete façade. In addition, hidden LED lighting contributed a visual interest at night. The Redevelopment Authority can also program color displays for special occasions. |
